Are Super Automatic Espresso Machines Worth the Investment? A Comparison of DeLonghi and Saeco Machines
Super automatic
espresso machines - the holy grail of coffee lovers. These machines promise a hot, perfect cup of
espresso with the simple push of a button. No longer do we have to deal with the fuss and mess of manual
espresso preparation. But are these machines really worth the investment? In this blog post, we will compare two popular brands, DeLonghi and Saeco, and uncover the truth behind the convenience.
The Test: DeLonghi's Magnifica S vs. Saeco's Incanto Carafe
To properly evaluate the worthiness of super automatic
espresso machines, we tested two midrange models - DeLonghi's Magnifica S and Saeco's Incanto Carafe. These machines are equipped with all the bells and whistles, promising to grind, compress, brew, and dispense
espresso automatically. Additionally, they come with milk frothing attachments for those fancy cappuccinos and lattes.
The Espresso Experience
First things first, let's talk about the
espresso itself. After all, that's what we're really after, right? The DeLonghi machine impressed us with its ability to produce
espresso with more crema, that delightful layer of foam on top. It truly felt like we were sipping a cup of liquid gold. On the other hand, the Saeco machine, while not as grandiose in the crema department, still delivered a satisfactory and smooth shot of
espresso.
The Learning Curve and Maintenance
Now, here's where the reality starts to kick in. While these machines promise convenience, they also come with a fair share of maintenance work. Cleaning the brewhead, performing deep cleans, and descaling - these tasks become an integral part of owning a super automatic machine. Suddenly, the idea of a quick and effortless cup of
espresso seems a bit tarnished.
The Nespresso Comparison
Ah, Nespresso - the other side of the coffee spectrum. While super automatic machines strive for the ultimate
espresso experience, Nespresso machines offer a simpler, quicker, and less messy alternative. With Nespresso, you pop in a pod, press a button, and voilà! The coffee is ready. Sure, it may not reach the heights of the super automatic's crema, but for occasional coffee enthusiasts, it might just do the trick. And let's not forget the minimal cleanup required.
The Verdict
So, are super automatic
espresso machines worth the investment? It depends on your priorities. If you highly value that perfect cup of
espresso, with all its heavenly crema, then a super automatic machine might be the way to go. However, be prepared for the learning curve and the maintenance work that comes with it.
On the other hand, if you're more of a casual coffee drinker, seeking convenience and simplicity, a Nespresso machine might suffice. It's quicker, less expensive, and requires significantly less cleanup. Sometimes, good enough is, well, good enough.
In conclusion, super automatic
espresso machines undoubtedly make great
espresso. However, the trade-off for that perfection is the maintenance and learning curve. So, before you make the investment, consider your priorities and weigh them against the convenience offered by other alternatives.

I own a DeLonghi and I love it! It's so convenient and makes great espresso every time. Haven't tried Saeco though, might have to check them out!
